HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH:
Today we recognize California Secretary of State, Alex Padilla who is celebrating 20 years of public service. One of our Pacoima treasures and role models, Padilla graduated from San Fernando High and went on to MIT where he got his Mechanical Engineering degree.
Padilla was elected to Los Angeles City Council District 7 in 1999 at the age of 26. Then in 2006 he was elected to the California state Senate and reelected in 2010. He was sworn in as Secretary of State in 2015 and reelected in 2018.
Padilla’s family migrated from Mexico settling in Pacoima. He was on the governing board of MIT with over 6,000 members, served as the youngest President and first Latino for League of California cities. He was also the first Latino and youngest person to serve as President of the Los Angeles City Council.
As the first California Secretary of state from Pacoima, Alex Padilla makes us proud and is an inspiration to the young people of our historic town. He is an example of how to excel in everything you do.
He was recognized by the Pacoima Historical Society in 2018 for his outstanding community service.
